BricsCAD V27 Drops the Extra License for STEP and IGES

Octave BricsCAD V27 went out today, Oct. 20, with an online launch at 16:00 CEST, and the most useful change is buried in the release notes for version 27.1.05. STEP and IGES import and export now work in BricsCAD Pro, Mechanical, BIM and Ultimate without a Communicator license key. Until now, reading a supplier’s STEP file meant buying and renewing that separate translator license. You still install the free Communicator plug-in, but the license key is gone for the two most common neutral formats.

The rest of the format list is tied to the product tier. Per the same release notes, Mechanical and Ultimate licenses unlock the other Communicator formats, which reseller CADGlobal lists as CATIA, NX, Creo, Parasolid and ACIS, while Pro and BIM users still pay extra for those. V27 also requires Windows 11 on Windows PCs, and V26.2 is the last version that supports Windows 10; Mac and Linux builds carry on as before. The release adds incremental 2D constraint solving while you drag grips, a customizable Drawing Health advisor and a more forgiving IFC import. It is also the first major release since Bricsys retired its brand and became part of Octave, the software company Hexagon spun off in May.

Opening a neutral file is only half of the job, and the bigger vendors are now competing on the other half. A STEP file holds the finished shape with no feature history behind it. On Oct. 14, Dassault Systèmes described LEO’s BREP-to-parametric conversion in SOLIDWORKS, which uses AI to turn imported STEP or IGES geometry into an editable, feature-based part. The company says it now recognizes circular patterns and contextual draft, which gives a cleaner feature tree.

Autodesk announced the same goal at AU 2026. Its AutoTimeline for Fusion converts imported geometry into editable parametric parts, AutoAssemble puts those parts together into assemblies, and Inventor will become the first Fusion Connected Client. At the low end of the market, ZWSOFT released ZW3D WuKong 2027X on Oct. 13 as a free upgrade for every 2027 customer, regardless of license type, with existing license codes still working.

For engineering managers, this changes what to ask a vendor. Reading STEP is becoming standard, so ask about export, because a system that imports freely but exports only to its own formats still locks you in. Ask which formats your tier includes after renewal, not just at purchase. And treat a feature tree that AI rebuilt from dumb geometry as a draft: the inferred dimensions and design intent are guesses until an engineer checks them against the supplier’s drawing and approves them.

N23D is being built as one Rust codebase in which neutral-file exchange is part of the core instead of a paid add-on. Its CAD module already has a STEP AP242 writer and reader with round-trip tests, and the same part record carries into PLM, so an imported supplier part is designed to keep its source file, revision and approval history. Any geometry that N23D interprets from an import is planned to go through the same approval step as a change made by hand.
