SAP crossed €10 billion in total revenue in a single quarter for the first time. Its third-quarter 2026 results, released Oct. 21, also showed more than €3 billion of non-IFRS operating profit, another first. Cloud ERP Suite revenue grew 29%, total cloud revenue grew 26%, and total revenue grew 13%. Operating profit rose 18%, faster than revenue.
The number to watch is the current cloud backlog: €24.1 billion, up 28%. That is subscription revenue customers have already signed for, so the move from one-time licenses to recurring fees is locked in for years. CEO Christian Klein credited the company’s “Autonomous Enterprise” strategy and its Joule Work AI, saying customers are paying for the cloud and data foundation that the AI runs on. In other words, AI is now the main argument for moving ERP to the cloud.

Mid-market vendors are making the same pitch with a different twist. Acumatica 2026 R2 lets customers connect Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI tools to their ERP data through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for plugging AI assistants into business software. Acumatica says role-based permissions and field-level data masking carry over to every AI query, and that IT keeps an audit trail. The release also adds a native data warehouse, so reports run against a copy of the data instead of slowing down order entry and invoicing, as ERP News summarized.
For manufacturers, Acumatica’s Oct. 19 walkthrough highlights scheduling: its planning engine now schedules to the minute instead of fixed time blocks, lets each work center be finite or infinite capacity, and merges overlapping shifts into one calendar. Epicor moved the same week. On Oct. 21 it made Epicor Prism generally available in selected European markets, with more than 18 prebuilt AI agents inside Kinetic that answer questions about live ERP data and take actions under existing role-based security and human oversight.

For buyers, the questions have changed. Ask whether the AI connector enforces exactly the same permissions as a user login, and whether every AI query and action is logged where an auditor can find it. Ask what an agent is allowed to change without a person approving it. And with SAP’s backlog growing faster than its revenue, ask what your subscription will cost at the second renewal, not just the first.
N23D is being built as one Rust codebase in which ERP, MES and the rest of the business stack share one record, so the job a planner schedules is the same job the shop floor runs and finance invoices. Any change an AI suggests is planned to go through the same approval step as a change made by hand, with the history kept, and N23D is planned to be sold as a permanent license rather than a subscription that grows at every renewal.
