93% Have MES, Only 23% Fully Integrated Across Sites

Rockwell Automation’s July 2026 survey of 1,560 manufacturing and industrial decision-makers across 17 countries puts a hard number on the shop-floor gap: 93% of manufacturers have a MES in at least one facility, yet only 28% have deployed it enterprise-wide and just 23% report full integration across ERP, PLM, quality, and OT. Adoption is no longer the story. Scale is.

Integration ranks as both the top buying requirement (44%) and the leading modernization headache, with 33% calling MES their biggest data-integration problem. MarketScale’s August read of the same data frames it bluntly: a plant pilot proves value; an enterprise execution standard is the missing operating model.

Without shared definitions for downtime, rework, and genealogy, every site invents its own “good” unit. That fragmentation is why cross-site KPI programs turn into reconciliation work instead of continuous improvement—and why acquired plants stay forever “special cases.”

AI ambition is racing ahead of that foundation. Manufacturers expect 42% of processes to be AI-supported within a year and 54% by 2030, yet 43% admit they are not effectively using the data they already collect. A model trained on Plant A’s MES tags cannot be audited in Plant B if work-order, scrap, and OEE schemas diverge.

Resilience is now a purchase criterion, not a footnote. Nearly half (46%) reported a cyber incident in the past year; security and compliance sit second only to integration among MES buying requirements (43%). Patchwork instances mean uneven patch levels, historian hooks, and remote-access rules—exactly when OT and shop-floor identity need one control plane.

For MES inside N23D, the Rockwell gap is the design brief: one work-order identity from ERP, one Item/VariantId from PLM, genealogy and as-built on the floor, NCR handoff to QMS, and AssetId life in TIX—on one native Rust binary, not a fleet of plant dialects glued at midnight. If Plant B cannot reuse Plant A’s execution definitions, you do not have MES at scale; you have fifteen pilots wearing the same badge.
