A Talker Research survey of 400 senior manufacturing leaders, commissioned by Propel Software and published August 20, puts PLM at the center of the agent era. Forty-nine percent ranked PLM as the top business system for AI agents to reach through Model Context Protocol (MCP). Thirty-eight percent named it the most valuable data for those agents to act on.
MCP is the open standard that lets AI systems connect to enterprise tools and data with a shared interface. Interest is no longer fringe: 91% of respondents reported rising organizational attention, 63% called it dramatic or significant, and more than 90% said they have already implemented MCP or expect to within twelve months.
Leadership is driving that urgency. Ninety-six percent of CxOs and 85% of board members reported increased interest in MCP. Over half (56%) said delaying adoption raises operating costs or competitive risk, and EVPs/VPs estimate nearly one-third of daily processes will soon be automated or influenced by MCP-connected agents.
The product-data case is blunt. Nearly nine in ten (89%) said a connected product foundation is essential for AI to deliver. Sixty-six percent said AI would be completely or mostly ineffective without access to requirements, bills of materials, and change histories. Three-quarters rated understanding relationships across product, quality, supplier, manufacturing, and customer information as critical or very important.
That matches the wider 2026 PLM shift: digital thread moving from slideware into procurement language, and vendors wiring agents into the system of record rather than bolting on chat. Siemens has been showing production Teamcenter agents for BOM and change, with MCP support called for later in 2026 so external agents can call the same product graph.
For PLM inside N23D, the survey is a stress test of the digital thread thesis: agents only help if Item, Variant, BOM, and change history stay one auditable memory. Fragmented Excel and drive folders just give MCP a faster path to bad answers. Keep the product record connected, and agents can act; keep it siloed, and the protocol only amplifies the mess.
