Ahead of IMTS 2026, CAM automation is moving beyond isolated toolpath commands toward agents that interpret geometry, tooling, machine constraints, and established shop practice. The emerging direction connects the broader CAM discipline to physics-aware decision support, but it does not remove the manufacturing engineer from the process.
Limitless Labs says its CAM Agent reads CAD geometry, applies a manufacturer’s tooling library, machine kinematics, and programming standards, then identifies features, sequences operations, recommends tools, and generates toolpaths inside NX, Mastercam, or Creo. The company reports programming-time reductions of up to 50 percent in customer deployments and describes its foundation model as trained on metal-cutting physics, production geometry, and machine constraints; those are vendor claims to examine in live production conditions.
Cimatron says its CAM Agent, developed with Limitless Labs, is integrated into Cimatron and can analyze part geometry and available tool libraries to generate complete 3-axis toolpaths. Cimatron positions feature recognition, strategy recommendations, and repetitive-task automation as ways to preserve programming knowledge and increase capacity while leaving complex decisions with experienced personnel.
The two announcements illustrate an important boundary: an agent may assemble a credible machining strategy without independently proving that the posted program is safe, economical, or repeatable on a particular machine. Programmers must still validate tooling and workholding, feeds and speeds, postprocessor output, collision behavior, machine simulation, and the first article before release to production.
Mastercam says Mastercam 2027 improves motion quality, setup workflows, simulation accuracy, and collision awareness, while giving CONNECT customers access to seven beta toolpaths built on EverPath. Mastercam describes EverPath as a unified, rule-based workflow with fewer inputs, automatic regeneration, real-time previews, and validation; Modern Machine Shop likewise presents it as evidence of growing automation in complex and multiaxis programming.
IMTS will therefore test more than whether an agent can produce toolpaths quickly: manufacturers should ask how decisions are traced, corrected, approved, and reused across parts, machines, and revisions. That controlled handoff from automated reasoning to accountable execution is the larger platform problem—and the standard physics-aware CAM must meet before speed claims become durable process capability.
