ModuleWorks shipped 2026.08 on 11 August 2026, and the useful claim is not another ribbon button. It is that engagement analysis and physics-aware roughing now run as first-class work inside the kernel layer that most CAM seats already embed. ModuleWorks says its components sit under more than 500,000 CAD/CAM and CNC seats worldwide. When that layer gets faster engagement tracking and native tool-assembly exchange, the wait moves off the programmer’s desk and into the product.
The headline number is concrete. High-performance engagement tracking uses a snapshot approach across multi-core CPUs and optional GPU parallel processing, and ModuleWorks reports engagement analysis up to five times faster with GPU acceleration. That is the difference between treating simulation as a verification tax and treating it as a computational engine that can feed parameter choices while the program is still open. SmartRoughing now takes VoluMill as a pattern, optimizing depth, width, spindle speed, and nominal feed while keeping VoluMill’s dynamic corner-feed reductions. A SmartRoughing Physics Report surfaces the slices and chosen limits so the black box has a window.

Interoperability is the quieter half of the release. MDES Tool Assembly Integration for Toolpath lets standardized tool-assembly objects enter toolpath calculation without a translation layer, and MDES Equipment Starter Export from MachSim hands machine-setup data to shopfloor collision systems and digital twins on an open interface. Feature-based machining-direction optimization for Auto 3+2 roughing picks orientations from geometry rather than raw stock volume. SuperFinish mixes NURBS accuracy with mesh reliability for mold-and-die surfaces. Together that is less “new strategy gallery” and more “make the path, the tool definition, and the machine setup speak the same language.”
On the seat side, CloudNC’s CAM Assist is now an add-on inside GibbsCAM (Sandvik Manufacturing Solutions) for 3-axis and 3+2 work, announced mid-August 2026. CAM Assist 2.0 generates strategies in minutes or seconds where the same work can take hours, then routes them through a Strategy Editor so programmers inspect, adjust, and approve before the operations return to GibbsCAM. That is the same oversight thesis as ModuleWorks’ physics report: automate the repetitive cut of the job, keep judgment on feeds, fixtures, and “will this actually cut.” CloudNC says more than 1,000 shops already use CAM Assist across Fusion, Mastercam, NX CAM, GibbsCAM, and SolidCAM.

The shop-floor reading is blunt. Programming time and verification time used to be two separate bottlenecks. Kernel-level GPU engagement tracking shrinks the second. AI strategy generation with a mandatory review step shrinks the first without pretending the post is the product of record. OPEN MIND’s hyperMILL 2026, also headed to IMTS 2026, pushes the same direction from the application layer: redesigned five-axis rest machining, minimum-clearance-angle control, and CAM Plan Turning that recognizes features into production-ready contours. Vendors disagree on UI. They are converging on associative motion that stays editable against the part.
For a digital thread, that convergence matters more than any single brand. A toolpath that is a dead G-code file is a one-way ticket off the model. A programming stack that keeps engagement data, tool assemblies, and machine setup on open exchange formats is closer to treating the cut as a view on the model — which is how N23D wants CAM to sit: associative operations on the CAD identity, materials from MAT, the machine as an AssetId, and no fork of the body just to make chips. Kernel math will keep moving. The requirement that stays is one change model from design into the cell.
